Frequently Asked Questions

What is SmartNet?

SmartNet is a purpose-built hail netting system developed specifically for New Zealand apple orchards. It offers effective crop protection while allowing maximum sunlight exposure and is designed to integrate easily with most existing orchard structures.

Unlike fixed netting systems that trap hail and risk collapse, the SmartNet V-release system uses bungees to flex and release accumulated hail load as it builds. The net temporarily drops to relieve pressure, then returns to position—minimising stress on your structure and extending the life of the system.
No, SmartNet is not just about hail protection. While hail protection is a major function, SmartNet also improves fruit quality. Growers report higher packouts due to reduced wind rub damage, reduced sunburn, and more effective spray coverage due to better containment. It’s a full protection system designed to improve fruit quality and orchard performance.
SmartNet allows 92% light transmission and blocks 18% of UV. This maintains optimal light conditions for healthy fruit development while reducing the risk of sunburn.
Yes. The system is designed to retrofit easily using steel post extensions with pre-drilled holes. This makes it compatible with most modern trellis systems without requiring major infrastructure upgrades.

SmartNet is fully customisable. We’ve supplied systems for plantings as narrow as 2.8 m in 2D systems, up to wider 4 m row spacings. Typical clearance from the ground to the net is around 4.2 m, but this can be adjusted to suit your machinery and preferences.

We supply the full kit, which includes the netting, clips, fixings, and bungees. Excludes bolts, wires, and installation labour. While we don’t offer installation, we do provide technical support and practical guidance based on our own experience. Since every orchard is different, our kitset approach allows flexibility for growers to install it in the way that best suits their block.

Installation time depends on how many people you have on the job. In general, you’ll need a team of four to eight people. Suitable equipment, such as a hydralada or platformis also required, these are commonly available on most orchards or easily hired from the market.

Yes. The yarn used in SmartNet has been age-tested using UV exposure machines that simulate years of sun damage. The UV stabiliser formula is specifically designed for New Zealand conditions. UVA and UVB absorption is also tested using specialised spectrophotometry equipment to verify the net’s 18% UV block rating and long-term durability.

SmartNet are designed for a 10+ year lifespan, based on the UV stabiliser formula and exposure conditions in New Zealand. The system is backed by a pro-rata warranty* for long-term confidence and reliability.
